All About Home Humidifiers

home humidifiers

Home humidifiers can save you and your home from the negative effects of unhealthy and damaging over-dry air. You will notice the difference in how you feel when your home has the proper level of humidity. You will feel more comfortable and be able to breathe easier.

Many see humidity as a nuisance, but the reality is, the right amount of it has many benefits which include:

  • Eliminating dry eye, nose and throat when you wake up in the morning
  • Reducing static electricity, which can damage electronics in your home
  • Protecting your furniture by reducing common irritants and cracks in the wood
  • Keeping wallpaper from peeling
  • Reducing cracks to your walls and wood floors
  • Saving energy – humidified air feels warmer, so you can turn your furnace down

Home humidifier installation

You can install a whole home humidifier in a new or existing heating and cooling system. Unlike portable humidifiers, whole home humidifiers, are installed directly into your heating and cooling system. It introduces humidity in the form of water vapor at the source and distributes through your ductwork. The level of humidity in your home is then controlled by your thermostat, just like the temperature. This way an even level of moisture can be released into your home all year.

In addition to whole home humidifiers, there are other types of humidifiers you may be interested in. Those include bypass humidifiers, fan powered humidifiers and steam humidifiers.

Bypass humidifiers add moisture to the warm air from a furnace. These humidifiers draw warm air from the home’s heat ducts and pass it through a water panel. The air absorbs moisture which is delivered back into the stream of air then into your home.

Fan powered humidifiers work the same as bypass humidifiers, but include a fan that blows air across the internal water panel for increased water evaporation.

Steam humidifiers add humidity to the air by heating water electrically until it boils to create humidity in the form of steam, even if the furnace isn’t on. The steam is picked up by the system blower then pushed through the home vents.
